Green Hearts gardening
Community action in Mile Cross
Over the past two years, local community groups have set up MX Green Hearts – a movement to improve green areas on the Mile Cross estate. One project has transformed an unloved alleyway into an attractive flower-filled area. With the help of Norfolk Wildlife Trust and the mental health charity MIND, locals cleaned up dog poo in the alleyway, weeded the area and planted spring bulbs and wildflower seeds. Other Green Heart projects have included:
Residents at the Mile Cross towers making a pollinator patch with native plants and flowers to encourage wildlife.
A new planned community garden on Burgess Road, which local groups are currently clearing.
A new orchard on green space in Bacton Road with young fruit trees being cared for by neighbours.
Regular litter picks giving local residents the chance to meet their neighbours.
Local resident and volunteer Chrissy Brightmore, who painted a mural on the telecom box there, said: “The community was so positive about it, it was lovely to see.”
